atNorth, a leading provider of high-performance computing and colocation services, is significantly expanding its data center operations in Iceland to address the rising demand for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). The company plans to add 35 MW of capacity to its ICE02 facility located near Keflavík and an additional 16 MW to the newer ICE03 campus in Akureyri, which was launched last year.
The first phase of the ICE02 expansion is projected to go live by the third quarter of 2024, with completion of both projects slated for early 2025. This enhancement is aimed at accommodating increasing client requirements for high-density infrastructure and HPC solutions.
Sustainability and efficiency are core commitments at atNorth, reflected in both the ICE02 and ICE03 campuses, which operate at a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2, denoting their energy efficiency. These data centers are designed to support modern air and liquid cooling technologies, catering specifically to organizations that require intensive computing resources, such as Crusoe, Advania, RVX, DNV, Opera, BNP Paribas, and Tomorrow.io.
This expansion underlines a growing demand from data-centric industries and highlights Iceland’s advantageous position as a hub for data centers. The location provides essential benefits for managing large-scale workloads, including robust connectivity, an expert workforce, a consistently cool climate for efficient cooling, and ample renewable energy resources.
Future Developments
In addition to increasing capacity in Iceland, atNorth is also committed to promoting a circular economy. They are collaborating with the Icelandic AgTech firm Hringvarmi to utilize waste heat generated from data centers. The partnership will employ Hringvarmi’s Generation 1 prototype module at the ICE03 facility, intending to leverage excess heat to enhance food production, such as the cultivation of microgreens.
Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, atNorth’s CEO, noted that there is a significant rise in demand for sustainable and energy-efficient data centers, both within Iceland and internationally. With power agreements and building permits secured, the company is well-positioned to continue its sustainable growth strategy.
Moreover, atNorth is scaling its operations across the Nordic region with four new data centers under development. This includes two sites in Finland, one in Ballerup, Denmark, and a second planned for Ølgod in Varde. These developments will expand atNorth’s data center portfolio to 11 locations across the Nordics.
Strategic Acquisitions
Headquartered in Reykjavik, atNorth currently operates seven data centers in four Nordic countries. Their acquisition of Gompute in 2023 has enhanced their capabilities, allowing the company to offer comprehensive solutions tailored for AI and HPC tasks while prioritizing scalability, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.
AtNorth is leveraging renewable energy sources in all its facilities and employing intelligent operations and efficient architectures to deliver flexible colocation solutions.
