IT departments are faced with significant challenges in recruiting professionals with skills in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and cybersecurity. Research conducted by Skillsoft highlights that these technological areas are pivotal for organizations as they prepare for 2025.

According to the latest IT Skills and Salary Report by Skillsoft, IT leaders plan to increase investments in AI and ML while also focusing on attracting talent skilled in cybersecurity. Orla Daly, CIO at Skillsoft, emphasized the necessity for organizations to proactively develop skills in response to the growing integration of AI technologies in business processes and an escalating demand for cybersecurity expertise.

The survey included approximately 5,100 IT decision-makers worldwide and outlined their investment priorities for the coming year. The results revealed that 47% intend to allocate budget towards AI and ML, followed by 42% for cybersecurity, and 36% for cloud computing. Other areas of focus include infrastructure, leadership skills, data analytics, and governance.

The report notes a shift from a rapid deployment of AI technologies in 2023 to a more strategic approach in 2024, where organizations are considering how to effectively integrate these technologies within their existing frameworks.

Skillsoft also found that 19% of respondents perceive a substantial risk of failing to achieve organizational goals due to skill shortages. Alarmingly, 65% of participants acknowledged ongoing skill gaps on their teams, with over half expecting these gaps to persist for the next couple of years.

When asked about hiring difficulties, respondents pinpointed cybersecurity and information security as the most challenging areas. Other difficulties include technical support, cloud computing, analytics, and AI, with a significant portion of respondents indicating that the fast pace of technological change, inadequate training investments, and retention challenges contribute to the skills shortage.

Skillsoft conducted this comprehensive survey from May to September 2024, utilizing the Qualtrics XM Platform to gather insights from IT professionals around the globe.
