Prometheus’ Ambitious 1.5 GW Pecos Plan: A Bold Test for Private Power Initiatives

Prometheus Hyperscale is undertaking an ambitious project to develop a 1.5 GW data center campus in Reeves County, Texas, which aims to avoid reliance on the ERCOT power grid by utilizing its own generation systems. This innovative approach allows for flexibility and reduced connection time, but it also introduces a significant range of challenges, including fuel supply, permitting, and maintenance.

The plan includes initial power generated from pipeline natural gas, with further expansion potential to reach 2.5 GW as the project grows. A co-located ethane fractionation facility will provide additional fuel options once operational, slated for early 2028.

Despite the promise, the project hinges on securing a commitment from prospective customers. Prometheus indicates that if a contract is signed by October, they could begin offering 100 to 150 MW of compute power by 2027. However, this modular construction approach needs customer confirmation to initiate necessary orders for both data centers and generation equipment.

During the development phase, Prometheus plans to employ rich-burn reciprocating engines for initial power generation, as they can be deployed more adaptively compared to traditional options. The actual power configuration and necessary capacity will ultimately depend on the chosen tenant’s reliability specifications.

The strategy to initially operate independently of the ERCOT grid means the campus will not connect to the grid until it makes strategic sense, driven by tenant needs. This decision was influenced by uncertainties in the Texas interconnection process, emphasizing the project’s commitment to speed and reliability through self-sufficiency.

Rolling out such a unique power strategy poses utility-like risks, requiring Prometheus and its future clients to carefully manage electrical reliability and generation risk. The aim is to potentially lower electricity costs while maintaining an independent power supply, thus removing the dependency on utility tariffs.

As for cooling, a closed-loop system using a mix of water and food-grade propylene glycol will be employed, significantly limiting water consumption and aligning with sustainability goals.

Overall, this project represents Prometheus’ broader vision of developing data centers with dedicated power systems, while also engaging with various energy solutions to meet the rising demand for AI compute. However, its success will depend on their ability to address complicated logistics and secure tenant commitments in a tight timeline.
