Uncertainty is increasingly permeating the data center sector as operators grapple with the rapid shifts brought about by artificial intelligence (AI). These changes affect various aspects of operations, including capacity, costs, and management needs. As a result, data center managers are facing higher rack densities and are being compelled to adopt phased construction approaches to meet evolving demands.
The Uptime Institute recently released its 16th Annual Global Data Center Survey, which surveyed over 1,600 participants, including more than 800 data center owners and operators, between April and May 2026. Key findings highlight a significant concern regarding costs: 79% of operators reported that financial issues concern management. Meanwhile, the modal rack density has surged to an average of 11 kW, marking an increase from the previous year’s 9 kW.
The survey also revealed that 46% of IT workloads are now hosted in third-party facilities, surpassing those on enterprise-owned sites for the first time. As demand for AI resources grows, it is pushing workloads towards colocation and cloud environments. Additionally, the difficulty of sourcing qualified candidates for data center roles has risen, indicating a tightening labor market.
Despite these challenges, operators noted a decline in significant outages, with only 47% experiencing impactful outages in the last three years, down from previous years. This shift reflects improvements in redundancy and modern infrastructure, although power issues still dominate as a primary cause of outages.
AI impacts extend beyond immediate operational concerns; they intertwine with sustainability goals, although carbon tracking lagged behind other metrics like power consumption and PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness). Operators recognize the importance of sustainability but stress that the focus on AI capabilities often overshadows this issue.
Overall, the survey underscores the shifting landscape of data centers, balancing the urgent needs brought about by AI with long-term sustainability and operational considerations. As operators embrace phased builds and higher densities, the complexities of managing these facilities amidst technological evolution will continue to challenge the industry.
