Data Center Power Coalition: Addressing AI’s Major Bottleneck

The rising demand for AI infrastructure is placing significant pressure on power resources. The coalition consists of 12 founding partners from both technology and energy sectors, focused on creating a uniform strategy for planning and deploying power infrastructure.

At the core of the coalition’s efforts is the "Data Center Power Playbook," which outlines a four-phase approach that covers everything from selecting sites based on power availability to integrating on-site energy generation and ensuring quicker connections to the power grid. Instead of promoting a singular technology, the coalition emphasizes collaboration among partners, encouraging the integration of different technologies to create cohesive energy strategies.

The key figure in this initiative is Aric Li, head of the Sijbrandij Foundation’s Data Center Energy Initiative. According to him, the coalition was formed to address the significant bottleneck that power represents to scaling AI compute capabilities. Conversations across the sector revealed that while energy companies often solve parts of the puzzle independently, the AI industry requires a more streamlined and packaged approach.

To ensure effective collaboration among diverse partners, the coalition has established a structure that allows partner companies to retain their competitive advantage while still contributing to the overarching goal of developing a streamlined energy solution. This means that while they will often share the same goals, partners are not required to work together directly on every project.

The coalition’s model emphasizes "power co-development," where power strategies are integrated with computing needs from the outset. This is expected to accelerate the connection process to the grid and provide better energy rates for consumers. In addition, this model focuses on establishing solar-and-storage energy setups at data center sites to enhance load flexibility, thereby contributing to overall grid stabilization while maximizing computational efficiency.

The organization also aims to help smaller operators facing high barriers due to lack of internal resources in energy planning. By providing guidance and access to vetted providers, the coalition hopes to minimize obstacles for all operators, regardless of size.

With a growing urgency for power solutions, the Data Center Power Coalition plans to expand its network and update its resources frequently to adapt to the dynamic landscape. This will support initiatives at their inception and prove their effectiveness through real-world applications, leading to widespread adoption of standardized power strategies across the industry.
