When a book is published, its content remains unchanged forever. This permanence raises concerns, particularly regarding domain names referenced in the text. If a domain mentioned in a book later changes hands or points to a different site, it can lead to unexpected and possibly inappropriate outcomes.
A pertinent example can be seen with the children’s book series Spy Pups. In these books, a domain linked to the author’s website was included. Unfortunately, the author lost ownership of this domain, which was subsequently redirected to adult content. This situation prompted the publisher to attempt to recover all copies from libraries and stores.
After reading Junkyard Planet, published in 2013, I noticed that the colophon included a disclaimer addressing this very issue:
Bloomsbury Publishing Plc does not have any control over, or responsibility for, any third-party websites referred to or in this book. All internet addresses given in this book were correct at the time of going to press. The author and publisher regret any inconvenience caused if addresses have changed or sites have ceased to exist, but can accept no responsibility for any such changes.
It’s uncertain how many books include disclaimers of this nature, as they are often found at the end of the book where many readers do not venture. Given that books have a longer shelf life compared to the often transient nature of domain names, this kind of acknowledgment appears to be a wise approach.
