The latest report for the week of December 29, 2025, to January 4, 2026, reflects a decrease in the number of global network outages, indicating an overall improvement in internet reliability.
During this week, ThousandEyes recorded 199 network outage events across various sectors, including ISPs, cloud service networks, collaboration applications, and edge services. This total represents a 14% decrease from the previous week’s 231 outages. In the United States, the number of outages fell significantly as well, from 100 to 71, marking a 29% decline.
Breakdown of Outages
- ISP outages: Global ISP outages dropped from 136 to 105, a decrease of 23%. U.S. ISP outages saw a more dramatic decline, falling from 51 to 26, a 49% reduction.
- Public cloud network outages: These increased globally from 47 to 59, with U.S. outages rising impressively from 22 to 37.
- Collaboration app network outages: Remarkably, there were no reported outages in this category for both global and U.S. networks.
Notable Outages
On January 2, Hurricane Electric, a network transit provider based in Fremont, California, suffered a substantial outage affecting various regions worldwide, including the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. The outage lasted for just over an hour, first impacting nodes in Los Angeles before spreading to other locations.
Similarly, on December 31, Cogent Communications faced a brief outage lasting nine minutes, impacting customers across multiple international regions. This outage was primarily concentrated in Washington, D.C., before resolving shortly after it began.
