Aviz Networks Unveils Enterprise-Grade Community SONiC Distribution: A Game Changer for Networking Solutions

Aviz Networks has announced a new pre-tested, multi-ASIC distribution of SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud) designed for enterprise environments. This enterprise-grade release aims to simplify the onboarding process for organizations looking to utilize an open-source option that can seamlessly operate across different hardware platforms while offering robust production-level support.

First introduced to the public as open-source in 2017, SONiC has gained traction among networking vendors. However, deploying this operating system in environments with hardware from various vendors has proven challenging. While the open-source code is available, many implementations require vendor-specific customizations, creating a barrier for businesses that want a straightforward solution for multi-vendor setups.

Aviz Networks, leveraging its years of experience in deploying SONiC in real-world scenarios, recognized these challenges and set out to create a more user-friendly product. The newly launched Aviz Certified Community SONiC is a pre-tested distribution that supports silicon from well-known companies including Nvidia, Cisco, Marvell, and Broadcom. This version is distinctive in that it provides a standardized networking operating system layer that is hardware-agnostic, akin to the consistent operation seen with Linux across various server hardware.

Vishal Shukla, co-founder and CEO of Aviz Networks, emphasized that the goal is to create a solution that businesses can readily adopt as a basic networking commodity, similar to how Linux is universally implemented across different systems. He pointed out that traditional networking vendors offer all-inclusive packages that combine hardware, software, and support, which community SONiC was missing. Aviz aims to fill this gap by offering a downloadable build tailored to specific switch models, enabling enterprises to implement SONiC without needing extensive expertise.

To enhance the community SONiC experience, Aviz has introduced several significant improvements. They expanded protocol support to include Free Range Routing (FRR), Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), and Multiple Link Aggregation Groups (MLAG)—all of which had varying implementations across different hardware vendors. Additionally, the distribution addresses previously identified bugs that arose during production use and provides monitoring data normalization across different chipsets, ensuring consistent performance and easier troubleshooting.

Furthermore, Aviz offers validated runbooks to guide enterprises through common network architectures. These approaches cover essential frameworks such as IP CLOS for data centers, EVPN/VXLAN for network overlays, and MLAG for redundancy.

Lastly, while the SONiC software remains free and open-source, Aviz charges for support subscriptions geared toward providing professional assistance and advanced functionalities, such as orchestration and monitoring services. This additional layer of commercial support serves to ensure that businesses not only have access to the software but also the practical help needed to deploy and manage it effectively in their environments.
