Domain name and web3 company D3 Global has officially launched its Doma Protocol mainnet, enabling domain registrants to integrate web3 capabilities with their domain names. This new functionality allows for the tokenization of domain names, letting owners fractionalize their digital assets.
At the onset of this launch, several registrars, including InterNetX and ConnectReseller, have partnered with D3 Global, with Encirca also operational on the Doma Protocol, offering web3 features for domains in 450 top-level domains.
The primary goal of the Doma Protocol is to enhance liquidity for domain owners, potentially attracting cryptocurrency enthusiasts through web3 exchanges. One of the most innovative features is fractionalization, which allows registrants to access value in their domains without the need for outright sales.
As a demonstration of the protocol’s capabilities, tokens for the domain "software.ai" will soon be available. Each domain will feature three key metrics before launch:
- Min Buyout: This represents the lowest price at which 100% of a domain can be sold, safeguarding against undervaluation.
- Starting FDV (Fully Diluted Valuation): This indicates the total market value of the domain based on the initial token price at launch. For software.ai, this starting valuation is set at $25,000, giving early participants access to tokens at a beneficial valuation.
- Bonding FDV: This feature employs an automated pricing structure that increases token prices as purchases are made. For software.ai, after starting at $25,000, subsequent transactions will gradually raise the price until it reaches $250,000.
Once this cap is reached, tokens will transition to open-market trading, where their prices will be influenced by supply and demand dynamics.
The performance of software.ai in this new market will provide valuable insights. While acquiring a portion of the domain for $25,000 appears promising, achieving a sale at $2.5 million may prove challenging.
