Oracle Unveils AmpereOne M A4 Instances to Enhance AI Performance and Efficiency

Oracle Cloud is set to enhance its services with the introduction of A4 compute instances powered by AmpereOne M processors. This new offering aims to provide higher efficiency and cost-effective performance tailored for AI and cloud workloads, with general availability expected in November 2025 across regions including Ashburn, Phoenix, Frankfurt, and London.

These A4 instances will be a significant advancement from the existing A1 and A2 compute shapes, both of which have already seen adoption from over 1,000 customers in 65 regions. The A4 instances promise scalability with configurations that can support up to 96 cores running at 3.6 GHz—a 20% increase in clock speed compared to previous iterations. They will also be equipped with 12 channels of DDR5 memory and 100G networking, which are crucial for handling intensive workloads such as AI inference and large language models.

Kiran Edara, Oracle’s Vice President of Compute, emphasized that this development aligns with OCI’s commitment to providing diverse computing options that balance performance, efficiency, and cost for customers. Companies like Uber and Oracle Red Bull Racing have already begun leveraging OCI, and with the launch of the A4 shapes, they expect even greater performance enhancements.

The architecture of AmpereOne M, developed specifically for cloud-native and AI workloads, offers consistent performance and improved efficiency compared to traditional x86 architectures. Jeff Wittich, Chief Product Officer at Ampere Computing, remarked that the A4 launch exemplifies how modern Arm designs are transforming computing economics, enabling customers to fully utilize the technology to advance their cloud and AI initiatives.

With enhancements like a 45% increase in per-core performance compared to the A2 shapes and significant cost advantages over competitor offerings, the A4 instances are positioned as an attractive solution for AI inference workloads, where efficiency is paramount. They are optimized for lower costs and energy consumption, better suiting the needs of small and mid-sized deployments focusing on performance predictability.

In support of AI development, Ampere has launched an AI Playground that provides tools and resources for developers, making it easier to create applications using their processors on OCI. Several initial clients, including Uber and Oracle Red Bull Racing, are moving to these new instances, anticipating improved performance and energy efficiencies.

As Oracle expands its own use of Ampere technology across various services, the collaboration has transitioned from initial experimental phases to a strategic partnership that supports enterprises in enhancing performance and energy efficiency. The introduction of A4 instances reflects Oracle’s commitment to offering sustainable, high-performance cloud solutions while reinforcing the growing acceptance of Arm-based architectures in the industry.
