Netskope’s recent global study has revealed a concerning disconnect between CEOs and CIOs that hinders the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in businesses. This report, titled Crucial Conversations: How to Achieve CIO-CEO Alignment in the Era of AI, highlights how differing priorities between these executive leaders could slow down strategic innovation, especially in a technology-driven business landscape.
The survey results are telling: 39% of CIOs feel misaligned with their CEO on critical decision-making, while 31% are uncertain about their CEO’s expectations. Furthermore, a notable 34% of CIOs report feeling disempowered by their CEOs regarding long-term IT strategy decisions—a significant gap given the rapidly evolving role of the CIO, which now encompasses not just IT, but broader business strategy and risk management.
Interestingly, the enthusiasm for AI is pushing CIOs to take on more strategic roles within their organizations. About 34% of CIOs stated they are now significantly involved in cross-company initiatives beyond IT, managing vital efforts related to AI such as digital innovation and workforce planning. Despite this broadened scope, CEOs expect CIOs to drive measurable outcomes while balancing risk and cost management.
Mike Anderson, Chief Digital and Information Officer at Netskope, pointed out that the CIO role is changing quickly, and leaders in this position must now navigate complex stakeholder relationships and express business outcomes fluently to effectively contribute at the executive level.
Netskope’s findings also illustrate a challenging balance between driving innovation and overseeing appropriate governance. While 41% of CIOs note a need for increased investment in IT modernization, 26% struggle to secure CEO buy-in. The research suggests that CIOs must balance transformative efforts with governance responsibilities, especially as they take charge of AI initiatives that affect workforce dynamics.
Today’s CIOs are increasingly seen as technical leaders with a deeper involvement in business strategy and stakeholder interactions, with 37% emphasizing that skills in these areas are now more essential than traditional technological expertise.
The report suggests that alignment between CIOs and CEOs in areas like cost, risk, innovation, personnel, metrics, and IT infrastructure is crucial for enhanced strategic outcomes. Netskope hopes that by providing actionable insights, the report will help foster essential conversations to bridge this disconnect.
Netskope’s research comes at a time when organizations are under increasing pressure to implement AI responsibly. As businesses look to expand their AI capabilities, the necessity for alignment between CEOs and CIOs becomes not just beneficial, but essential for sustainable success in creating intelligent enterprises.
Following Netskope’s recent IPO, analysts have responded positively, issuing strong buy ratings as the company proves its dominance in the cloud security sector and its relevance to AI workloads, marking a notable upward trajectory in the market landscape.
