Blykalla, evroc, and Studsvik are collaborating to pave the way for Europe’s first nuclear-powered data centers in Sweden. They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to consider building these facilities at Studsvik’s licensed nuclear site located in Nyköping.
This partnership aims to merge advanced nuclear technology with robust digital infrastructure to tackle the critical issues of energy reliability and the increasing power demands associated with artificial intelligence. Blykalla, a Swedish startup specializing in small modular reactor (SMR) technology, will provide the necessary know-how for delivering clean, stable, and affordable energy. Evroc, based in Stockholm, will contribute its expertise in hyperscale cloud and AI infrastructure.
Studsvik, with a history of over 75 years in operating nuclear facilities, will leverage its regulatory experience and site capabilities, including fuel, materials, and waste handling. Together, these companies aspire to position Sweden as a frontrunner in the deployment of nuclear-powered infrastructure supporting AI technologies.
The demand for energy is surging, particularly driven by data processing and AI workloads. Small modular reactors, which are compact and can be produced in a factory setting, are viewed as an effective solution for supplying localized, zero-emission energy to vital digital infrastructure. SMRs provide scalability while reducing dependency on fossil fuels or unreliable power grids.
The MoU sets the stage for a feasibility study that will evaluate the technical designs, commercial frameworks, and regulatory requirements for hosting both SMRs and large-scale data centers in the same licensed location. The initiative also includes discussions with local stakeholders and could establish a commercial power purchase agreement once proven feasible.
Blykalla’s CEO, Jacob Stedman, emphasized the transformative potential of this project, highlighting how small modular reactors could fuel the AI revolution sustainably. Evroc’s founder, Mattias Åström, echoed this sentiment, indicating that the partnership signals a significant shift towards creating climate-resilient, high-performance AI infrastructure.
Studsvik’s CEO, Karl Thedéen, pointed out the unique opportunity their licensed nuclear site presents for integrating advanced nuclear technology with industrial-scale digital growth, marking a crucial step forward in realizing this vision.
A joint steering group will oversee the feasibility efforts and refine the technical layout and business model. Formal partnership negotiations are expected to commence later this year, with aspirations of developing data centers that are entirely powered by clean nuclear energy.
This collaboration could significantly enhance Sweden’s nuclear innovation ecosystem and redefine how essential digital tasks are powered, particularly in a world that increasingly values energy security and sustainability.
