PGP Glass, a global glass packaging company, is undergoing a comprehensive transformation of its Operational Technology (OT) and Internet of Things (IoT) systems. This multiyear initiative focuses on modernizing and securing the infrastructure they depend on for manufacturing, device management, and energy monitoring.
The manufacturing sector faces increasing cybersecurity threats, with a report from Omdia indicating that 80% of manufacturing firms experienced a rise in security incidents last year. Ransomware attacks on industrial organizations rose by 87%, with PGP Glass being mindful of these statistics while upgrading their systems. Although they have not yet suffered a breach, the company recognizes the heightened risks their digital transformation could pose.
PGP Glass, headquartered in Mumbai, operates over 70 production lines and employs more than 3,500 people worldwide. The company has doubled its revenue over the past three years, expanding its reach into regions like the Middle East and North America. Key to their growth strategy is a digital transformation initiative that began in 2017, accelerated by their acquisition by Blackstone in 2020. As they adopt AI and Machine Learning (ML) technologies, they have increased data feeds from their manufacturing systems, requiring around 12,000 sensors for real-time energy monitoring—crucial since energy costs account for 20% of their input expenses.
Despite these advancements, the transition has opened up new cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Older manufacturing systems were not originally designed with robust security features, leaving them exposed to modern threats as the company embraces Industry 4.0. The management team, led by Sudip Mazumder, Chief Digital and Information Officer, recognizes that enhancing efficiency requires a comprehensive response to these security challenges.
To fortify their cybersecurity posture, PGP Glass has been implementing the ISO 27001 framework for information security, ensuring compliance with standards while evaluating their existing security measures. Their quest for robust OT security led them to seek an advanced monitoring platform in early 2023. After evaluating various options, PGP Glass selected Armis Centrix for its extensive database of manufacturing equipment, which allows better discovery and monitoring of connected devices without installing additional components.
The phased rollout of the Armis system began in late 2023, with implementation across multiple plants in regions including India, Sri Lanka, and upcoming expansions into the U.S. and Europe. These efforts are supported by cyber risk consultants from Wipro, ensuring that the transition meets their stringent security standards.
As PGP Glass integrates its IT and OT environments, they position themselves as leaders within Blackstone’s portfolio, significantly enhancing their security protocols. Although the company has invested in new technologies, they have managed to reduce cybersecurity premiums and consolidate their security tools, demonstrating the effectiveness of their strategy in mitigating risks while maintaining a compliant and secure operational framework.
