EXA Infrastructure has announced the launch of Project Visegrád, a transformative fiber backbone initiative poised to enhance cross-border connectivity in Central Europe. This project represents the most extensive fiber deployment in the region in 25 years, linking Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary with EXA’s robust hyperscale network in Germany and Austria.
The new infrastructure will feature high-capacity fiber routes connecting major cities, including Warsaw, Poznań, Prague, Bratislava, and Budapest directly to Berlin, Frankfurt, and Vienna. Additionally, EXA plans to broaden its metro fiber presence in key cities such as Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava, and Berlin, thereby integrating leading carrier-neutral data centers into the network.
Despite Central Europe being one of the fastest-growing digital economies, it has historically lagged in connectivity to international markets compared to Western Europe. EXA’s CEO, Jim Fagan, emphasized that Project Visegrád aims to address this disparity. He stated, “With Project Visegrád we are building the resilient, scalable backbone needed to unlock the region’s full potential, while also extending EXA’s reach into new growth markets across the Balkans, Turkey, and beyond.”
The backbone will be constructed to ensure long-term scalability, utilizing 216-fibre Corning Ultra G.652D cables within HDPE ducts featuring multiple microducts. This design will not only optimize flexibility but will also facilitate future upgrades, including the transition to hollow-core fiber technologies. Most of its routes will traverse secure corridors along existing oil and gas infrastructures, such as the Druzhba oil pipeline, to guarantee resilience.
Fagan highlighted that the infrastructure would represent a significant enhancement in performance and reliability, setting new standards for optical networks within the region. It aims to provide a future-proof foundation for hyperscalers, carriers, and enterprises that demand high-level connectivity.
The initial fiber routes of Project Visegrád are anticipated to be operational by mid-2026, with additional rollouts continuing throughout 2027. This initiative underscores EXA’s commitment to expanding its reach in high-growth markets while delivering infrastructure tailored to meet the increasing requirements of hyperscalers and enterprise customers.
