Empowering Control: SAP’s Data Sovereignty Service for Cloud Workloads in Your Own Data Center

SAP customers can now enjoy enhanced data sovereignty by running their workloads fully within their own data centers through the new SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site service. This service was introduced alongside the global launch of the company’s Sovereign Cloud platform.

With SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site, customers will have local SAP or certified personnel managing the workloads in datacenters approved by them. This approach allows customers to maintain control over data handling, logging, and key management, while any third-party providers must also adhere to the same sovereignty standards to avoid potential vulnerabilities.

In addition to this, SAP has rolled out its Sovereign Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform globally, specifically targeting European Union (EU) enterprises. This initiative is aimed at helping these organizations run enterprise resource planning (ERP) AI workloads without depending on U.S. infrastructure, ensuring compliance with EU data protection regulations.

The service also includes Delos Cloud, which is tailored for the German public sector and developed with local partners to satisfy the country’s strict information security requirements.

The notion of data sovereignty has shifted recently; it is no longer solely about adhering to regulations and compliance. A variety of geopolitical developments have made operational, political, and technological independence increasingly essential, especially for businesses in the EU.

SAP recognizes this shift and emphasizes that Europe’s digital resilience relies on a secure, scalable, and future-ready sovereignty. "SAP’s full-stack sovereign cloud offering provides customers the freedom to choose their deployment model while ensuring compliance with the highest standards," stated Martin Merz, president of SAP Sovereign Cloud.

The company has established digital sovereignty as a strategic priority, committing to invest €20 billion (around $23.3 billion) to create new digital sovereignty products for both the EU and other regions.

As the landscape of cloud services evolves, it appears that the earlier concept of a single global infrastructure is transforming into a more balkanized model where different geographical regions may have distinct cloud infrastructures. Enterprises are gradually recognizing that ceding too much authority to cloud providers over their data, availability, and infrastructure is no longer a viable option.

Garima Kapoor, co-founder and co-CEO of MinIO, highlighted this change, asserting that the emergence of services like SAP’s Sovereign Cloud grants organizations greater control over their data and overall strategic direction. Customers can now rely on these services to maintain their digital autonomy and define their data destiny more assertively.
