Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the global launch of the Amazon Elastic VMware Service (Amazon EVS), a new product that allows customers to run and scale VMware workloads on AWS without the need for re-platforming or refactoring applications. This initiative simplifies the integration of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) with AWS’s robust cloud services.
Amazon EVS enables enterprises to migrate workloads while retaining their existing AWS applications, allowing them to use familiar VMware tools and processes. The service supports VCF license portability, enabling organizations to transfer existing licenses to AWS seamlessly, all while maintaining established operational practices and avoiding the need for retraining or rewriting documentation. Companies have the option to self-manage their environments or collaborate with AWS Partner Network professionals who are skilled in VMware operations.
Several major organizations have already adopted Amazon EVS for their migration and modernization efforts, including Huron Consulting Group and Aeromexico. For instance, the city of Santiago de Cali in Colombia successfully migrated to AWS within three weeks while keeping 75% of their workloads on VMware technology, ensuring swift deployment and continuity of vital public services. Aeromexico highlighted that the platform supports quicker cloud adoption without the necessity for further investments in on-premises infrastructure.
Steven Jones, the general manager for Commercial Applications at AWS, explained that this launch is a significant step in expanding AWS’s VMware portfolio, which has been evolving for nearly ten years. He emphasized how easily customers can access Amazon’s myriad services—including analytics, databases, AI, and storage—alongside their VMware workloads. Ahmar Mohammad from Broadcom noted that Amazon EVS enhances modern private cloud capabilities while maximizing the value of existing VMware investments.
Amazon EVS integrates smoothly with Amazon’s Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) environments, providing users with detailed control over configuration and management. Deployments can be started easily via a guided AWS console process, compatible with existing backup and storage solutions like Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, ensuring that organizations can uphold a consistent strategy for disaster recovery and data management.
Rather than merely serving as a migration tool, Amazon EVS also functions as a modernization platform. Organizations can integrate with AWS’s generative AI services, fostering the development of AI-driven applications without jeopardizing their existing infrastructure.
Currently, Amazon EVS is available in regions such as US East (Ohio), US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Dublin), Europe (Frankfurt), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo), with plans for expansion into additional areas. AWS is targeting enterprises that seek quick, low-risk transitions to the cloud while maintaining familiarity and control over their VMware environments.
This development highlights the increasing demand for hybrid cloud solutions that provide operational continuity while granting access to the latest cloud capabilities, allowing businesses to effectively utilize both established VMware infrastructure and AWS’s growing suite of advanced services.
