WatchGuard has announced an update to its Firebox Tabletop series of firewalls, which are compact security devices targeted at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) managing Internet of Things (IoT) devices and other localized IT resources. As the landscape of network security evolves, SMBs find themselves balancing the use of cloud security services with the necessity of on-premises hardware to protect local resources effectively.
Ryan Poutre, the Director of Product Management for Network Security at WatchGuard, noted that certain applications, particularly those involving medical equipment and IoT, benefit from an appliance-based approach rather than relying solely on cloud solutions. The updated Firebox models include enhancements aimed at addressing the diverse needs of the SMB market.
The new Firebox Tabletop series consists of four models:
- T115-W: An entry-level wireless model incorporating Wi-Fi 7 and 4GB of RAM, suitable for solo practitioners and small offices.
- T125: A widely recognized model with enhanced Unified Threat Management (UTM) capabilities, ideal for small businesses and retail settings, also featuring Wi-Fi 7.
- T145: Equipped with a high-speed 10G network port and fanless operation for noise reduction, and optional Wi-Fi 7.
- T185: The most robust model, boasting 250% faster VPN performance than its predecessor, the T85, and ultra-quiet operation.
These models primarily utilize MediaTek processors to optimize performance and cost, except for the T185, which features a more powerful Intel processor to meet high-performance demands. Additionally, WatchGuard has enhanced the models’ enclosures for better heat distribution, supporting quieter operations.
All appliances operate on Fireware 12.x, WatchGuard’s secure OS, and are transitioning to WatchGuard Cloud for centralized management of both firewalls and other security products. This cloud platform integrates advanced capabilities like Extended Detection and Response (XDR), which utilizes AI for enhanced threat detection and response.
The need for tabletop firewalls is underscored by increasing compliance requirements impacting small businesses, driven by client mandates for improved cybersecurity measures. Many smaller operations now find themselves compelled to meet standards such as PCI DSS and NIST due to their roles in larger supply chains.
WatchGuard advocates for hybrid security strategies, merging hardware with cloud-based solutions to address current security challenges effectively. The ongoing updates to their hardware lineup are part of a broader initiative to ensure these appliances meet modern requirements, with plans for additional updates in subsequent years.
