Digital Realty Launches First Data Center in Crete, Boosting Mediterranean Connectivity
Digital Realty has inaugurated its first carrier-neutral data center on the island of Crete, located near Heraklion. This new facility aims to enhance Mediterranean connectivity and expand the company’s global infrastructure footprint.
The new data center, named HER1, is crucial in connecting Europe with Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa through a dense network of subsea cables. This initiative places Digital Realty in a distinctive position as the sole global data center provider on the island, promoting Crete as a significant hub for digital connectivity.
Fabrice Coquio, Senior Vice President and Managing Director at Digital Realty in France, emphasized the importance of HER1, stating, "With this new facility, we reaffirm our commitment to establishing the Mediterranean as a premier digital hub. By enhancing connectivity and infrastructure, we are addressing the growing needs of businesses and digital providers in this rapidly evolving region."
Digital Realty’s expansion in Greece has been significant. Since 2016, the capacity for international bandwidth in southern Europe has surged sixfold, with an annual growth rate of around 30%. HER1 will join Digital Realty’s existing infrastructure in Marseille and additional data centers under development in Barcelona and Rome, solidifying the Mediterranean’s role as a critical interconnection hub.
The introduction of HER1 further strengthens Digital Realty’s portfolio in Greece, building on its Athens campus, which has three operational data centers with plans for a fourth and fifth in progress. This infrastructure supports over 30 connectivity providers, meeting the rising demand for connectivity and processing capacity from both local and multinational companies.
