Amazon is set to launch three new top-level domains (TLDs) next month, specifically .free, .hot, and .spot. This move has been anticipated since the 2012 expansion of domain names, and the rollout will commence on April 2 with a sunrise period for these domains.
Following the sunrise phase, which is designed for trademark holders to claim domains, there will be a Dutch auction-style early access period from May 12 to May 17. Pricing for the domains will start around $6,000 on the first day, decrease to about $3,000 on the second day, and finally drop to approximately $200 for the last day of the auction. Domain registrars will determine their own specific pricing.
After the early access period, the domains will become generally available for registration on May 19. For instance, 101Domain, a domain registrar, has already listed its prices: $44.99 for .free, $59.99 for .hot, and $29.99 for .spot.
Amazon has secured the rights to these domain names after winning a private resolution against five companies for .free and three for .hot. The tech giant also won the .spot domain by paying $2.2 million in an ICANN auction, outbidding notable competitors like Google and Dotspot LLC.
