Microsoft has unveiled the new Windows Server Preview Build 26280. This build offers both Desktop Experience and Server Core installation options for its Datacenter and Standard editions, in addition to the Annual Channel designated for Container Host and Azure Edition.
Labeled as the Windows Server 2025 preview, participants in the Server Flighting program will automatically receive this update today.
The latest update includes the Windows Admin Center (WAC) application directly in the build, simplifying its installation on servers. The application is available for download from the Windows Server Store and comes pre-installed on the Windows Server Desktop.
This version also introspects a new Feedback Hub application, which can be updated by navigating to the app’s settings tab.
A noted issue with this release is that Sysprep is unable to generalize images, a problem acknowledged and slated for a future repair.
Additionally, there might be confusion as the label for this update might refer to Windows 11, but it pertains to the Windows Server update. This discrepancy is planned to be corrected soon.
Installing the WinPE-Powershell optional component does not effectively incorporate Powershell into WinPE, causing Powershell cmdlets to malfunction. Users relying on Powershell functionality within WinPE are advised against employing this version.
Additionally, in Windows Server 26280, executing the “wevtutil al” command to archive event logs leads to the crash of the Windows Event Log service, thus interrupting the archiving process. To restart the service, one must run “Start-Service EventLog” from a command prompt with administrative privileges.
Furthermore, Microsoft has released ISO and VHDX images for the preview build 26280.5000 of Windows Server 2025 and its Azure Edition, along with various language and feature packs.
It is notable that Windows Server 26280 is scheduled to expire on September 15, 2025, which is marginally sooner than the expected end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025.
