Vertiv and Oklo Join Forces to Deliver Nuclear-Powered AI Data Center Innovations

Vertiv and Oklo have announced a strategic partnership aimed at revolutionizing power and thermal management in hyperscale and colocation data centers. Their collaboration is focused on integrating advanced nuclear energy solutions with high-performance cooling systems to meet the increasing needs of AI and high-density computing environments.

Under this partnership, Vertiv, a leader in digital infrastructure solutions, will work alongside Oklo to develop a range of power and cooling technologies powered by Oklo’s innovative nuclear microreactor systems. The first demonstration site for this new technology will be at Oklo’s Aurora powerhouse.

As the demand for computational power escalates, largely due to the rapid uptake of AI, machine learning, and cloud computing, data center operators face significant pressure to balance high performance with environmental sustainability. This venture seeks to tackle these challenges by utilizing Oklo’s clean, onsite power generation alongside Vertiv’s expertise in data center thermal and electrical systems.

Unlike conventional nuclear energy solutions, Oklo employs a modular approach using compact power plants that generate both electricity and high-temperature steam. This setup is designed to support data center operations while enhancing energy efficiency by integrating waste heat into Vertiv’s customized cooling systems.

The partnership will also focus on creating reference architectures for comprehensive data center designs, which will enable efficient deployment models that capitalize on onsite nuclear energy. This approach aims to foster the development of resilient, scalable infrastructure that can rapidly adapt to localized energy demands.

Jacob DeWitte, co-founder and CEO of Oklo, highlighted the collaboration’s potential to unlock new efficiencies for data center operators through tailored power and cooling solutions. He emphasized that using commercially available components would further streamline deployment timelines without altering the core design of Oklo’s microreactors.

From Vertiv’s perspective, CEO Gio Albertazzi noted that the partnership represents a natural progression in their mission to provide energy-efficient infrastructure for emerging data centers. He acknowledged the growing relevance of nuclear energy for hyperscale and colocation providers seeking to expand AI capabilities while minimizing their carbon footprints.

Oklo’s business model, which includes owning and operating its own power facilities, offers clients added flexibility in collocating power with computing assets, thereby reducing transmission losses and simplifying the planning of edge or distributed data center strategies.

As the data center industry continues to evolve in response to the increasing demands for AI and cloud computing capabilities, the Vertiv-Oklo partnership signifies a pivotal shift towards incorporating alternative energy sources, such as advanced nuclear power, to address the sector’s future power and cooling needs. Both companies believe that this collaboration is just the beginning of a broader trend toward cleaner and more efficient digital infrastructure solutions.
