In a significant announcement made during the first days of the Trump administration, a $500 billion initiative known as Project Stargate was revealed, aiming to develop AI infrastructure across the United States and generate over 100,000 jobs. Attending the launch were notable figures such as Larry Ellison from Oracle, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Masayoshi Son of Softbank.
The project involves an immediate allocation of $100 billion and plans for the construction of 20 large-scale data centers, each covering 500,000 square feet. The initial center is already underway in Abilene, Texas, with several others following suit.
During the announcement, Ellison expressed his enthusiasm for how AI could revolutionize healthcare, enabling doctors in remote areas to access specialized treatment methods used by professionals in leading medical institutions like Memorial Sloan Kettering and Stanford.
However, uncertainty looms regarding Oracle’s role in this ambitious scheme. Traditionally, Oracle has sourced its data centers through leasing rather than building them, raising questions about its capacity to contribute effectively to Stargate. Analysis from Synergy Research Group suggests that despite Oracle’s recent investment in cloud services, there is little evidence to show a shift in their leasing strategy.
Critics have pointed to Ellison’s current detachment from the latest technological developments as a potential hindrance to the project’s success. Rob Enderle from The Enderle Group argued that, although he could execute a plan, Ellison’s recent focus on other ventures may leave him ill-equipped for such an expansive project.
Additionally, OpenAI’s involvement has faced scrutiny due to its ongoing struggles to monetize its technology, particularly ChatGPT, which has resulted in financial losses and a reliance on substantial investments from Microsoft.
Notably absent from the announcement was Microsoft – OpenAI’s major backer – leading to speculation about the state of their partnership. Microsoft did, however, provide a statement affirming its commitment to working with OpenAI until 2030 and mentioned past contributions made to Azure services.
The announcement’s credibility is further undermined by the lack of participation from Nvidia, a key player in the AI hardware market, which has had financial engagements with Oracle in the past. Meanwhile, there are reports of the presence of MGX, an Abu Dhabi investment firm involved in AI, which raises additional questions about the project’s international implications.
The skepticism surrounding Stargate has been echoed by influential figures, including Elon Musk, who criticized the financial backing secured by some involved participants and echoed concerns over the viability of Softbank’s contributions.
Experts have suggested that Project Stargate might resemble a publicity stunt intended to attract funding rather than a serious plan. The initiative is described as potentially showcasing how costly the competition for attaining artificial general intelligence (AGI) can be without clear funding details or concrete action plans. Some analysts contend the likelihood of successful project completion is slim, which may, ironically, be a beneficial outcome given the uncertainties involved.
