Last month, Cloudflare introduced a new feature in Cloudflare Radar to rank top-level domains (TLDs) based on their “DNS Magnitude,” which reflects the number of unique clients sending queries to a TLD. Among the findings, it was reported that the .su domain, associated with the former Soviet Union, ranked higher in DNS Magnitude than the ubiquitous .com domain.
However, further investigation revealed that a few unusual second-level domains were primarily responsible for this traffic spike, including bizarre entries like 14emeliaterracewestroxburyma02132.su. It was ultimately discovered that these domains are part of a botnet operation.
In response, Cloudflare began to remove these problematic domains from its second-level domain (SLD) list, resulting in their exclusion from that specific ranking. Nevertheless, the .su domain remains listed in the TLD rankings, currently holding the #7 position. The top-ranked TLD is .st, which similarly includes a domain linked to the botnet issue as well.
This situation raises questions regarding the accuracy of domain rankings when influenced by bot activity, and highlights challenges in assessing the genuine traffic of certain domains.
