Public Interest Registry (PIR), which oversees the .org top-level domain, has announced its financial outcomes for 2024 through a recently published Form 990 tax return. In the past year, PIR reported $104.2 million in program revenue, a modest increase from $103.7 million in 2023. Total revenue also showed growth, rising to $106.4 million from $105.1 million, reflecting improved returns on investments.
PIR’s expenditures on its backend services provided by Identity Digital decreased significantly to $10.5 million, down from $15.1 million in the previous year. This shift follows Identity Digital winning a renewed contract to manage .org domain services. Since 2016, when PIR put the management contract out for rebid, expenses related to registry services have dropped nearly 75%. With 11.1 million domains currently under management, this new contract effectively sets a cost benchmark of approximately $1 per domain.
Additionally, PIR reported a separate revenue of $0.2 million from “TLD Assignment Revenue,” likely stemming from a deal with Identity Digital for managing several top-level domains. The organization also allocated $3.1 million to ICANN and invested $1.2 million in promotional services to GoDaddy, up slightly from $0.9 million in 2023.
PIR’s primary beneficiary, the Internet Society, continues to receive reduced contributions from PIR, which totaled $61.0 million in 2024, down from $64.8 million the previous year and $69.3 million in 2022. In terms of new domain registrations, PIR noted that 2.2 million domains were registered in the last year, the highest number reported since at least 2017, with renewal rates standing at 52.4% for the first year and 74.2% for the second, leading to an overall renewal rate of 80.1%.
