This past weekend, I attended a movie for the first time in many years, and I was surprised by how frequently the .movie domain was displayed during the previews. It appeared that nearly every preview promoted a .movie domain.
Interestingly, most official movie websites still utilize the more traditional .com domain. For instance, the preview for King of Kings directed viewers to a page on its Angel.com domain, which had been acquired for $2 million in 2021.
Curious about the current trend, I researched a selection of films currently in theaters. Despite the prevalence of the .movie domain in ads, I found that four out of five official movie sites were on .com domains:
- Paddington in Peru – PaddingtonMovie.com
- The Monkey – TheMonkeyFilm.com
- Love Hurts – LoveHurtsMovie.com
- Dog Man – DreamworksDogMan.com
In contrast, the official site for One of Them Days is OneOfThemDays.movie, and the upcoming Smurfs film does indeed use its promoted smurfs.movie domain.
This showcases a peculiar discrepancy: while movies are promoting .movie domains in their marketing materials, the official sites often reside on .com. Those interested in diving deeper into the reasons behind this domain preference can listen to a related podcast episode featuring Bill Sweetman.
