IT teams are finding themselves unprepared to tackle significant challenges such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity threats, and the management of hybrid workforces. This insight comes from SolarWinds’ 2025 IT Trends Report, which highlights a concerning disconnect between how resilient organizations feel and their actual readiness to face these issues.
In the survey conducted with over 600 IT leaders from nine countries, while 90% of the respondents described their organization as resilient, less than half expressed confidence in their capabilities to handle pressing matters like AI implementation and cyber defense. For instance, 52% felt assured about managing cyber threats, 45% believed they could support remote workforces, and only 38% felt comfortable addressing the complexities brought by AI. Furthermore, a quarter of those surveyed indicated they were confident about managing policies related to personal device use.
RJ Gazarek, senior director of product marketing at SolarWinds, noted that urgency often leads organizations to quickly adopt new technologies without a comprehensive strategy. He emphasized that while technology is crucial, it should be part of a broader approach that includes considering the skills of those who utilize these tools.
The report stresses the importance of focusing on the interaction of people, processes, and technologies. Many IT leaders believe that their challenges are not due to a lack of technology but rather inefficient workflows and understaffing. Specifically, 53% cited slow response to issues as a concern, while 36% highlighted staffing shortages as a significant challenge.
Moreover, the consequences of inadequate operational resilience are often felt by customers. The survey revealed that 71% of IT leaders view customer experience as severely impacted by critical system failures. Additionally, approximately one-third reported lost revenue due to these outages, and more than a quarter noted damage to their brand reputation.
While more than half of the companies track performance metrics related to their issue management capabilities, 45% admitted they do not monitor such metrics for various reasons, including a lack of awareness or difficulty in measurement. Those who do chart these metrics suggested that tools have the most considerable impact on reducing detection and repair times.
Cullen Childress, chief product officer at SolarWinds, asserted that operational resilience is a strategic necessity for modern organizations. Achieving this requires equipping IT teams with not just technology, but also well-structured workflows and skilled personnel to ensure agility and foster a competitive advantage in the industry.
