Modular data center specialist Soluna Holdings is expanding its portfolio of wind-powered facilities with the launch of Project Hedy in South Texas. As data centers worldwide grapple with soaring power demands, there is an ongoing effort to find sustainable alternatives to traditional energy sources. Wind power is gaining traction among renewable options for data centers, as more operators explore its potential to support long-term sustainability goals.
Soluna, based in New York, recently unveiled Project Hedy, a new 120 MW facility that will be colocated with a 200 MW wind farm in Cameron County, South Texas. This facility represents the latest evolution in what Soluna describes as “renewable computing,” a model that reimagines data centers as flexible power consumers that can adapt to the natural rhythms of renewable energy.
Project Hedy joins a series of previously launched wind-powered data center projects by Soluna, including Project Dorothy, which is a 100 MW facility in Biscoe County, Texas.
The Challenge of Wind-Powered Data Centers
While wind power presents a valuable piece of the data center energy puzzle, it also introduces unique challenges. John Belizaire, CEO of Soluna, points out that the primary challenge is intermittency — the wind doesn’t blow on demand. Soluna has engineered its model to specifically address this challenge.
Belizaire noted that South Texas is home to some of the largest wind farms in the U.S., but also faces issues such as transmission bottlenecks, extreme heat, and high curtailment rates. Soluna’s approach includes behind-the-meter integration with renewable power plants, allowing its facilities to draw power directly from generation sources rather than relying on traditional grid connections.
“By operating behind the meter, we bypass long interconnection queues and relieve pressure on constrained transmission lines,” Belizaire explained, emphasizing the economic and deployment advantages of this strategy.
Engineering for Intermittency
Traditional data centers require consistent, uninterrupted power. However, Soluna has designed its facilities to thrive on variable energy sources. The company focuses on workloads that can tolerate flexibility, such as Bitcoin mining and certain AI processes like training and fine-tuning.
Soluna’s proprietary orchestration platform continuously analyzes factors like local power pricing, weather conditions, and grid demand to optimize computing operations. Project Hedy serves as a digital battery, capturing curtailed power that would otherwise be wasted and converting it into computing power.
“Traditional grid connections force wind farms to curtail output when the grid can’t absorb it,” Belizaire explained. With Project Hedy, he expects to reduce curtailment by at least 79%, unlocking considerable value and enhancing grid stability.
Wind-Powered Data Centers: A Growing Prospect
Soluna is not alone in its pursuit of harnessing wind power for data centers. For instance, in late 2024, Google announced a partnership for renewable energy, including wind, for its data center projects. In the U.K., Stellium is collaborating with the Dogger Bank Wind Farm to use offshore wind to power onshore data centers. A particularly innovative approach in Germany involves housing data centers inside wind turbine towers through a company called WindCORES, which operates data centers within existing wind turbines.
This growing trend highlights the potential and challenges ahead for wind-powered data centers as they seek to align with the demands of modern computing while contributing to sustainability and energy efficiency.
