Infineon’s Power & Sensor Systems division has formed a partnership with Nvidia to upgrade the power architecture in AI data centers. The goal is to shift away from the outdated, cluttered arrangement of power cables to a centralized high-voltage DC power system.
As GPUs demand upwards of 1 kW of power per chip, the power requirements for data center racks have surged significantly—from an average of 120 kilowatts to 500 kilowatts in just a few years, with expectations to surpass one megawatt by 2030. This escalating power burden has led to an increase in the rate of power failures. To address these challenges, the industry has relied on placing multiple power supplies within a single rack, which complicates setup and generates additional heat.
The new approach proposed by Nvidia and Infineon involves converting power directly at the GPU and upgrading the system’s backbone to 800 volts. This transition promises improved reliability and efficiency while managing heat generation. Nvidia introduced the 800 Volt direct current (VDC) power system at Computex 2025, highlighting the inadequacies of the current 54 Volt architecture, which is increasingly prone to failure due to the rising demands from AI processors.
According to Alvin Nguyen, a senior analyst with Forrester Research, this change is timely and necessary given the growing power needs for AI applications. The centralized 800 VDC setup reduces power losses, enhances efficiency, and improves reliability. However, the implementation of this new system will require innovative power conversion solutions and necessary safety measures to mitigate risks and minimize downtime for maintenance.
Infineon’s division president, Adam White, emphasized the critical need for enhanced power systems to support the future of AI data centers. Nvidia is pushing for widespread adoption of the 800 Volt system, collaborating with over 50 partners to develop the infrastructure needed for this transition. At the recent OCP Global Summit in Germany, numerous industry players showcased advancements in silicon, components, and power systems in alignment with the new 800-volt DC data center architecture.
