IT employment experienced a decline of 0.05% in August, translating to a reduction of 2,400 jobs month-over-month, based on an analysis conducted by TechServe Alliance regarding the high-tech employment landscape. When considering the annual figures, the IT job market contracted by 0.33%, which corresponds to a loss of 17,500 positions. In a more upbeat development, the staffing organization highlighted that engineering roles witnessed an increase exceeding 1% year-over-year, contributing 29,800 jobs during the same timeframe.
“As the overall job market weakened in August, IT employment faced challenges in gaining traction,” stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe, in a statement. “Throughout 2024, IT job growth has remained flat after experiencing 23 consecutive months of job losses. I anticipate that IT employment will continue to experience stagnation until the uncertainty surrounding the economy, the national election, and persistent geopolitical issues dissipates.”

Training and education for employees regarding AI will be increasingly essential, as studies indicate that a significant number of employees lack knowledge on how to integrate this technology into their respective roles.
As highlighted in Slingshot’s 2024 Digital Work Trends Report, a significant 77% of employees feel unprepared, lacking proper training on the AI tools their managers provide. This sentiment is shared by managers as well, with only 27% believing that employees are entirely trained in the AI tools at their disposal.
The study, carried out in the second quarter of 2024 by Dynata with 253 participants, indicated that the absence of AI skills and access to quality data are major hindrances to successful AI integration. Almost two-thirds (64%) of respondents mentioned that their organizations lack AI experts, which hampers the availability of AI tools. Additionally, 45% identified poor data quality as a primary obstacle to implementing AI in the workplace. Furthermore, a lack of technological infrastructure is another reason cited for the limited use of AI tools in some organizations.
“Data is a crucial concern for employees regarding AI: 33% of employers assert that their organization would be prepared to adopt AI if their data were thoroughly verified for accuracy, and 32% believe they require further training on data and AI before making that leap,” according to the report.

This week, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published its latest employment figures, revealing a continuous decline in the ratio of job openings to unemployed individuals. This trend suggests that unemployment rates are likely to rise further.
According to the BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS), the total number of job openings reached 7.7 million at the end of July, while hires amounted to 5.5 million. Meanwhile, the number of “separations” grew to 5.4 million, which includes quits, layoffs, and discharges totaling 3.3 million for the same period. These recent figures suggest troubling times ahead for employment across the nation, as noted by industry experts.
“The labor market is no longer cooling down to its pre-pandemic temperature … it’s dropped below,” stated an Indeed Hiring Lab report regarding the BLS statistics. “The labor market is past moderation and trending toward deterioration.”
For those in the IT sector, the BLS data indicates a modest increase of approximately 5,000 jobs in high-tech fields for 2024; however, this growth will not be sufficient to counterbalance the estimated 145,000 unemployed IT workers, according to Janco Associates.
“Based on the most recent analysis of BLS data, there are currently around 4.18 million positions available for IT specialists in the United States. Ongoing layoffs at major technology firms have negatively impacted overall IT recruitment. These large technology companies are continuing to reduce their workforce to improve their financial outcomes. Recently, companies like Intel, Microsoft, and Google have announced additional layoffs,” stated M. Victor Janulaitis, CEO of Janco. “Meanwhile, BLS statistics reveal that approximately 81,000 IT professionals secured employment, while 147,000 were actively seeking jobs in June. Our analysis suggests that this trend will persist through July and August.”

Recent data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that previous job growth estimates were incorrect. The agency disclosed this week that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created in the 12 months concluding in March 2024 than initially reported. This revelation, along with findings from Indeed that show a gradual rise in the unemployment rate, is amplifying concerns about a potential recession.
As highlighted by Indeed’s Hiring Lab, the unemployment rate has increased by 0.55 percentage points, reaching a low of 3.5% in January 2023 when averaged over three months. Although the adjusted BLS figures indicate a weaker hiring climate and a cooler market than initially expected, Indeed points out several reasons for “cautious optimism” regarding the U.S. labor market. For example, the number of job postings and the rise in wages may continue to draw more individuals into the workforce.
Indeed also noted that, “Alongside a relatively high number of job opportunities, another contributing factor that could be enticing more workers to rejoin the labor force in greater numbers is the robust wage growth, which, although it has tapered from its recent peaks, remains consistent with pre-pandemic levels.”
