Navigating Job Loss: Your Essential Guide to Surviving Layoffs

As AI continues to evolve and business dynamics shift quickly, numerous organizations this year have declared layoffs, and it appears this trend might persist. These workforce reductions vary in scope from smaller scales such as eBay cutting 1,000 positions to significantly larger numbers, with over 12,000 anticipated layoffs at companies like Dell and Intel.

Regardless of the number of job cuts, affected employees are thrust into making challenging and unforeseen decisions. Hastily made decisions could potentially end careers or even result in legal consequences if not carefully assessed.

This week, we’ll delve into the topic of layoffs, concluding with my Product of the Week: a novel head-mounted display by Goovis, perfect for those who enjoy watching TV in bed but aren’t ready to stop when their partner is.

There appears to be a misunderstanding in the layoff process that many corporations seem to overlook.

The first significant layoff I went through was at IBM during Louis Gerstner’s tenure. What distinguished this layoff from others was how it was handled: employees destined to be laid off were gathered for a meeting. Meanwhile, their belongings were collected and transferred to an auxiliary office location where they had three months to secure new employment, either within IBM or elsewhere. Throughout this period, they retained their full pay and benefits. The sole focus for these employees was to find new job opportunities, and many succeeded.

This method mitigated common layoff issues such as disruptive behavior, the morale dip from mixing safe and exiting employees, and the prevention of malicious actions against IBM from those laid off.

This precaution was notably absent in another tech company years later, where a dismissed employee took a pivotal role with a major client and canceled contracts, severely impacting the company’s revenue and necessitating its sale to a competitor.

Contrastingly, under CEO Carly Fiorina, HP’s execution of layoffs was critically poor. The company did not support its laid-off staff adequately. Amidst these layoffs, the acquisition of new corporate jets and a public increase in Fiorina’s pay exacerbated the sentiment of both the dismissed and the remaining employees.

Fiorina’s political campaign in California ended in defeat, closely tied to the number of workers she had previously laid off, along with their families. This outcome seemingly served as a harsh consequence of her treatment towards her employees.

The manner in which a company handles layoffs reveals a lot about the upper management’s regard for its workforce. Organizations led by CEOs who mismanage layoffs are considered risky as such executives often place higher value on their personal earnings over the welfare of their employees, shareholders, and customers. Inadequately managed layoffs endanger all three groups.

Employees who are laid off face difficult decisions, and some react negatively. This reactive behavior can range from criticizing the company, stealing corporate assets, to extreme cases such as one incident where a laid-off CIO deleted the company’s databases, resulting in imprisonment.

Occasionally, some dismissed workers may resort to violence, which is always inexcusable. A historical example is the extreme incident during the 1974 Borax layoff and strike, where severe conflict ensued between the town’s residents and the company, leading to significant violence including the shooting down of helicopters and physical assault on company managers.

The discussion with a former elite security squad was reminiscent of a battleground scenario, highlighting how extreme situations can arise from widespread discontent. Such rare yet extreme cases were part of educational narratives shared in my training, and they were downright harrowing.

Workers should be aware that their actions could exacerbate situations. Engaging in aggressive behaviors might lead to severe legal consequences and potentially damage future employment prospects. Such actions harm not just the employer but primarily the individual and their loved ones.

Securing a new job while still employed is generally more straightforward than finding one post-termination as it avoids tricky questions about the reasons for dismissal. These questions could influence an interviewer’s decision-making process and potentially jeopardize one’s chances at securing a position.

Often, those who remain after company layoffs perceive those who were let go as fortunate. This perception stems from the fact that remaining staff frequently must take on additional duties without extra compensation. Poorly managed layoffs can have ripple effects, such as subsequent layoffs, diminished sales, reduced customer loyalty, and a weakened execution capacity of the company.

It’s important to evaluate whether you can handle the potential stress and increased responsibilities that come with corporate upheaval.

However, there could be significant rewards for those who stay. If your contributions are recognized by management during tough times, you may be in a prime position to take advantage of new opportunities that surface once the company recovers.

Not effectively showcasing your hard work can mean missing out on these opportunities, pushing you to consider other options. Conversely, neglecting your duties could place you at risk for future layoffs, an outcome best avoided.

Seeking a new position within the same company should only be an option if your current department is phased out yet you still appreciate the organizational culture. A layoff due to poor performance, however, can tarnish your reputation, complicating efforts to secure a new role internally and increasing vulnerability in future restructuring. Switching companies might be a more advantageous strategy under these circumstances.

It is wise to steer clear of companies that have repeatedly conducted layoffs over the past five years, as this could suggest deep-seated issues that may not be solvable. Experiencing layoffs frequently is something no one desires.

Well-managed companies typically avoid layoffs because there are more prudent cost-cutting measures that carry fewer risks. Unfortunately, the methodology of reducing employee numbers has significantly deteriorated, and the rise of AI might lead to even greater reductions in staff numbers in the future.

Enhancing your skills or gaining proficiency in a secondary domain could be beneficial, especially if AI technologies potentially influence your job sector.

The best course of action, especially if you are dealing with anger or impulsive behavior, is to take some time off. Use this period to evaluate your options and devise a secure strategy as you reflect on your experiences.

After being laid off, I know people who have gotten rid of all their expensive possessions, taken up relatively low-paying, low-stress, and fun jobs, and realized that such changes have led to a much better quality of life. Being laid off can provide the opportunity to transform your life for the better, a step more of us should consider especially when dissatisfaction with current career paths is common.

This challenging phase will eventually pass if you avoid making rash decisions and instead utilize it to seek better employment and improve your overall life framework. Importantly, it’s vital to manage your emotions constructively and not vent your frustrations on friends, children, or your spouse, as it could lead to negative consequences.

Wishing you the best of luck, and for those experiencing layoffs, you have my deepest empathy. I hope that you find yourself in a better situation soon.

I have been a long-time purchaser of Goovis headsets and have acquired every model they’ve released so far.

I also own Rokid headsets, which are distinct because the Rokid models resemble glasses, allowing for private viewing (only the wearer can see the display) while still enabling visibility of your hands as you type.

In contrast, Goovis headsets offer a more isolated experience, which enhances their suitability for video watching or gaming with controllers, situations where monitoring your hand position on a keyboard is unnecessary.

The Goovis Art represents a hybrid design, mixing traditional Goovis headset qualities with aspects of Rokid’s approach. It delivers the same superior quality for which Goovis is known, while also not sealing completely around the face, thus preserving your ability to see your hands and employ it for work-related activities as a head-mounted display.

Furthermore, its display can flip up, allowing for quick disengagement, useful if you need to attend to someone or investigate an unexpected sound. This feature is particularly advantageous when I watch numerous videos before sleeping, especially since it prevents disturbing my wife who may prefer to read or sleep. Normally without the headset, I would contend with her dissatisfaction due to the disruptive screen light, even though using headphones is an option.

With the Goovis Art, I can watch things independently without my wife being involved. This setup makes both of us content as I can multitask by handling emails or browsing social media on my laptop with a quiet, non-mechanical keyboard. Using a tablet in these conditions doesn’t work well due to difficulties in operating a virtual keyboard in low light.

Currently, the Goovis Art is available on Indiegogo at a 37% discount with immediate shipping that typically takes about a week from China. The price is currently $440, plus additional costs for shipping, taxes, and accessories. The package I chose included a case and a streaming box, which I use when my phone isn’t compatible with an external monitor for watching movies. The retail price is set to be $699, so purchasing now offers a good savings.

Goovis has consistently produced quality products, and with the Goovis Art allowing me to browse YouTube without any issues from my spouse, it’s my top product choice this week.
