Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue support for password management features in its Authenticator app, effective August 1, 2025. This decision aims to streamline the autofill process within the app, as stated in a recent support document.
Starting in July 2025, the autofill feature will cease to function, and passwords will no longer be retrievable through the Authenticator app from August onwards. This change follows the recent removal of the capability to add or import new passwords, although users can still utilize autofill until July.
The transition does not completely eliminate the password management feature; instead, it will sync saved passwords and addresses with users’ Microsoft accounts. Users will then be able to access this information through the Edge browser, provided that it is set as the default autofill provider.
After the cutoff date, any saved passwords will be inaccessible via the Authenticator app, and generated passwords that are not saved will be deleted. However, it’s important to note that passkeys are not affected by these changes. Users who have enabled passkeys must keep the Authenticator app active as their passkey provider, as disabling it will also deactivate their passkeys.
For those using alternative password management solutions such as Apple iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, they can designate these as their default autofill provider on their devices. Additionally, users have the option to export their passwords from the Authenticator app to a chosen service before the changes take effect.
