Micron Technology, a leader in memory and storage innovation, has announced a significant expansion of its data center storage offerings with the launch of three new solid-state drives (SSDs) tailored for the demands of AI workloads. These SSDs are developed using Micron’s proprietary G9 NAND technology, each designed to fulfil specific requirements in modern data centers ranging from ultra-low latency to high capacity.
The new products include the Micron 9650, the first PCIe Gen6 NVMe SSD on the market; the Micron 6600 ION, a high-capacity E3.S SSD aimed at AI data lakes; and the Micron 7600, a Gen5 SSD optimized for mixed workloads and designed to deliver stellar performance with minimal latency. This move supports Micron’s strategy to boost its AI infrastructure capabilities by providing faster, denser, and more energy-efficient storage solutions.
The Micron 9650 PCIe Gen6 SSD achieves sequential read speeds of up to 28 GB/s and 5.5 million IOPS in random reads, making it well-suited for AI inference and large language model applications. This product allows for improved data feeding to GPUs, which enhances throughput and reduces latency for demanding AI tasks. Additionally, it offers significant energy savings—up to 25% better for writes and 67% for reads—compared to previous generation SSDs, which is vital for scaling compute-heavy workloads.
Micron has confirmed successful integration with industry allies like Broadcom and Astera Labs, along with liquid-cooled versions of the 9650 supporting advanced AI server requirements. The SSD also meets stringent security standards beneficial for users, including governmental agencies.
The Micron 6600 ION boasts an impressive capacity of up to 245TB in a single unit, making it ideal for AI data lakes and hyperscale data centers. This SSD provides storage density that delivers more than 88PB per rack, thereby enhancing power and space efficiency. The E3.S variant with 122TB capacity is designed for 1U servers and consumes only 1 watt per 4.9TB, achieving a 37% improvement in energy efficiency compared to traditional HDDs.
Key partnerships are forming around the 6600 ION, with Supermicro incorporating the SSD into its petascale storage solutions and WEKA employing the drive in their Augmented Memory Grid to optimize GPU memory for high-throughput AI tasks.
Completing the SSD lineup, the Micron 7600 PCIe Gen5 SSD is positioned for mixed workloads ranging from AI inference to database operations and real-time analytics. With a latency of less than 1 millisecond in RocksDB environments, it delivers 12 GB/s read speeds while facilitating 27% faster write speeds compared to competitors. This model enhances energy efficiency for write-heavy tasks and stands out as a balanced option for general data center applications.
All three SSDs benefit from Micron’s vertically integrated supply chain, ensuring robustness and security. This includes features like self-encrypting drives and firmware verification standards, enhancing data safety across the product range. Samples of the 9650 and 7600 are already with customers, with full commercial release expected by the end of 2025. The 6600 ION’s 122TB model will be available in the third quarter of 2025, and the 245TB version is slated for early 2026.
