Meta has recently announced the launch of new features to enhance user safety on Messenger and WhatsApp, particularly focused on reducing the risk of scams.
These updates include new warnings for WhatsApp users when they try to share their screen during video calls with unknown contacts, aiming to prevent the accidental sharing of sensitive information such as bank details or verification codes. Additionally, those using Messenger can activate a "Scam detection" option in their Privacy & Safety settings. This feature alerts users if they receive any suspicious messages from unknown contacts that might indicate a scam.
Meta has highlighted that this detection process occurs on users’ devices, ensuring the confidentiality of end-to-end encrypted chats. In cases where a message is flagged as potentially scam-related, users have the option to report their recent messages for AI review. It’s important to note that once messages are reviewed by AI, they lose their end-to-end encryption.
If the messages are confirmed as scams, the users will receive information about common scam tactics, such as fake job offers or quick money schemes, and will have the option to block or report the suspicious accounts.
In its ongoing fight against scams, Meta has taken action against over 21,000 Facebook pages and accounts falsely portraying themselves as customer support in an attempt to deceive people into revealing personal information. Furthermore, since the beginning of the year, the company has identified and shut down nearly 8 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram linked to criminal organizations conducting scams, which predominantly affected vulnerable populations, including the elderly.
These scams often originate from Southeast Asia and are referred to as "romance baiting," where cybercrime syndicates entice victims into investing in fraudulent schemes, leading to substantial financial losses. Scammers typically make initial contacts through dating apps or social media, build a rapport, and then guide victims towards investments, particularly in cryptocurrencies, before disappearing with the funds.
In summary, Meta’s new tools aim to fortify user protection against scams, highlighting the company’s commitment to addressing online security concerns amid an evolving landscape of cyber threats.
