The IOEMA subsea cable project has chosen Greenhouse Datacenters in the Rotterdam/The Hague area as a new landing site, further enhancing Northern Europe’s connectivity aimed at supporting artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. This decision marks a significant milestone as it adds the seventh landing point for the IOEMA cable in Northern Europe and the second in the Netherlands, with the first landing site already established in Eemshaven in the northern part of the country.
The project aims to provide a cutting-edge fiber optic connection across five key markets in Northern Europe—linking the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Norway—to create an extensive network that spans 1,600 kilometers. The cable is designed to ensure security and resilience, taking global tensions into account by fully armoring the system. IOEMA also considers incorporating sensors into the system, striving to make it the first SMART cable in Northern Europe. Collaboration with partners like Eurofiber, Arelion, Colt, and Bulk underpins this initiative.
The strategic choice of Greenhouse Datacenters is due to its ideal geographic positioning, located just 12 kilometers from Scheveningen, where the cable will make landfall. Greenhouse has established a robust ecosystem with additional connectivity providers, including AMS-IX and Lumen.
Eckhard Bruckschen, CTO of IOEMA Fibre Ltd, expressed enthusiasm over the partnership, emphasizing that it connects IOEMA to an extensive network ecosystem, thus allowing organizations in the area to access fast and secure connections to other major Internet hubs in Northern Europe.
Ruben van der Zwan, CEO of Greenhouse Datacenters, highlighted the importance of this partnership for the digital landscape in the South Holland region. He noted that the new submarine cable not only adds network capacity but significantly enhances the Netherlands’ status as an international digital hub, encouraging economic growth and bolstering data sovereignty.
Rick Pijpers, a strategic advisor for the project, underscored the importance of the landing station as a gateway for global data flow and the enhanced international connectivity it will bring to cities such as Rotterdam and Brussels, creating a corridor for future AI developments.
Peter van Burgel, CEO of AMS-IX, stated that the integration of the new cable will strengthen the existing Point-of-Presence at Greenhouse, thereby solidifying its role as a key digital hub, particularly in support of AI-driven growth.
Established in 2023, IOEMA Fibre Ltd is on a mission to create a high-capacity undersea fiber optic network, connecting significant markets in Northern Europe. Meanwhile, Greenhouse Datacenters, operating since 2013, is a key player in the region, known for its secure, sustainable data center operations and strong commitment to maintaining high uptime and scalability for IT infrastructure.
