Intel Maintains Its Grip on Server Market Share Amidst Industry Noise

Intel has managed to retain its market share in both the client and server segments against competitor AMD, despite facing numerous challenges. According to Mercury Research, chip sales for both companies were relatively flat in the second quarter of 2025, indicating stability rather than significant market shifts.

Recent tension arose when Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and former President Trump exchanged harsh words, with Trump initially pushing for Tan’s resignation. Following a recent meeting, however, Trump praised Tan as a “success.”

The X86 processor unit shipments for the second quarter of 2025 showed an unexpected uptick beyond typical seasonal norms, largely driven by robust growth in the IoT and SoC sectors, where both AMD and Intel saw considerable shipment increases.

In traditional server and client CPU markets, growth was modest and in line with historical trends. Reportedly, outside the IoT and SoC boom, it was an unremarkable quarter for conventional X86 markets, according to Dean McCarron, a principal analyst at Mercury.

Intel’s share of the market, excluding IoT and SOCs, stood at 75.8% compared to AMD’s 24.2% in Q2, a slight change from 75.6% and 24.4% in Q1. While this marked a small decline from 2024, when Intel dominated with a 78.7% share, fears of significant losses for Intel appear overstated.

The server market experienced limited sequential growth, as neither company posted substantial changes in shipment numbers compared to the previous quarter. However, the year-over-year figures revealed significant growth due to last year’s low points.

Intel’s ability to maintain server unit shipments partly stemmed from shifting deliveries toward non-data center products, such as Xeon D processors, which, while ensuring volume, come with significantly lower average selling prices leading to decreased revenue in those categories.

AMD reported a record high in server revenues largely due to an increased mix of its new Turin core CPUs, with its market share rising to 37.2%, a modest increase. Without considering IoT/SoC products, Intel’s shipments slightly outpaced AMD’s for the quarter, buoyed by strong mobile CPU sales. Meanwhile, AMD saw gains in desktop shipments.

Additionally, Arm architecture showed increasing strength in the server domain, aided by Nvidia’s GB200 processors. On the client side, while Apple experienced slight growth, this was counteracted by a drop in Chromebook shipments.
