IBM Unveils Enhanced AI and Security Features in New Enterprise Power11 Server Family

IBM has unveiled its latest Power11 servers and chips, designed to assist enterprise customers in expanding their infrastructure for secure AI, hybrid cloud, and edge computing. Set for release on July 25, the Power11 family includes a range of models, from the premium IBM Power E1122 to the entry-level Power S1012. These servers are engineered to support machine learning (ML) applications, enhance AI capabilities, and integrate more closely with IBM’s hybrid cloud offerings, particularly those involving Red Hat and watsonx.

A noteworthy feature is the forthcoming Spyre AI Accelerator, slated for release in Q4 2025. This accelerator aims to significantly enhance AI processing speed and accuracy by offloading specific tasks from the main server units to the accelerator. This, according to Tom McPherson, general manager of IBM’s Power Systems, will foster quicker responses and better overall system performance.

The Spyre Accelerator will also be featured across IBM’s core infrastructure servers, enhancing various processing systems, including the Telum II processor used in new z17 and LinuxONE mainframes. Each accelerator consists of 1TB of memory and 32 AI accelerator cores, designed for seamless integration into existing applications and workflows.

The Power E1180 server promises robust specifications, including:

  • Options for 10, 12, or 16 core processors operating at 4.4 GHz.
  • Capacity for up to 256 Power11 processor cores and up to 64 TB of DDR5 DRAM memory.
  • A maximum of 192 PCIe slots with dynamic workload management features.

IBM is also launching the mid-range Power E1150, which supports 32 to 120 processor cores, allowing for flexible resource consumption that aligns with customer power needs, including options for pay-as-you-go services.

Drake, a senior research director at IDC, highlights that Power11 is tailored specifically to meet the demands of AI, including performance requirements for processing and managing data at scale. Additionally, advancements in automation capabilities promise benefits across management, reliability, and compliance within the Power ecosystem.

The Power11 servers come equipped with features intended to facilitate zero planned downtime during maintenance, including automated workload management and autonomous patching. This means that critical applications can continue running while essential system updates occur.

For cybersecurity, the IBM Power Cyber Vault leverages AI and the NIST framework to proactively manage threats, while a built-in quantum-safe cryptography aims to protect systems from complex cyber attacks.

With a comprehensive set of server features, including IBM’s PowerVC for virtualization and management, the new Power11 family is designed to not just support but also enhance AI development across hybrid environments.

The primary challenge for IBM will be to widen its customer base beyond traditional enterprises, contending with other providers in the AI-native cloud space.
