How the AI Data Center Boom is Transforming the US Power Supply Chain

The rise of AI technology has sparked a dramatic increase in demand for electrical equipment within the U.S. data center sector. A report from Wood Mackenzie reveals that the market for electrical infrastructure in data centers is projected to soar to $65 billion by 2030, up from approximately $20 billion in 2026. This surge is primarily driven by the increasing need for transformers, switchgear, and power distribution systems, particularly as hyperscale data center construction accelerates.

Data centers have transitioned from a minor segment of electrical equipment demand to becoming the leading consumers — powerful enough to alter production capacities, pricing dynamics, and lead times throughout the supply chain. Ben Boucher, a research director at Wood Mackenzie, notes that U.S. data center capacity is expected to expand significantly, from around 24 GW to 100 GW between 2026 and 2030, which creates competition with utilities for electrical resources.

As major players in the technology sector, including Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta, report skyrocketing AI demand, they are also committing record capital expenditures, exacerbating the gap between infrastructure supply and user demands. Constraints in power, cooling, and regulatory approvals are becoming increasingly prominent.

One of the most pressing issues is the rising need for electrical equipment. Wood Mackenzie’s report forecasts that by 2030, data centers might represent nearly 40% of the total U.S. electrical equipment demand, increasing from a historically small percentage. This concentration of demand shifts purchasing power to a handful of hyperscale customers, putting smaller buyers and utilities at a disadvantage as they face longer wait times and uncertainty in securing necessary equipment.

With the construction of new data centers now dependent on delivery timelines rather than just available power, there are reports of lengthy delays. For example, in the PJM Interconnection region, projects aiming to become operational in 2025 experienced an average of eight years waiting in the interconnection queue. The process has been streamlined somewhat, but interconnection studies often still take one to two years, contributing to ongoing supply chain challenges as demand rises.

Moreover, these challenges are not confined to just the PJM region; in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, large-load data center requests are pushing into the hundreds of gigawatts. In response, many developers are adopting phased project rollouts, focusing on staging new sites over time and waiting for necessary infrastructure upgrades.

According to Rob Gramlich, president of Grid Strategies, the intricate coordination required for large data centers contributes to these delays, particularly in light of limited grid capacity. Both Boucher and Gramlich agree that the issue stems from a combination of power limitations and equipment shortages affecting the overall data center expansion.

To mitigate these obstacles, operators are adapting their approaches to infrastructure design and procurement. Schneider Electric’s Steve Carlini highlights a shift toward prefabricated electrical systems, reflecting the industry’s response to labor shortages and rising rack density requirements. Additionally, operators are beginning procurement processes earlier, locking in supply for critical equipment long before it is needed to ensure stability in lead times and costs.

Despite the current hurdles, the belief persists that manufacturing and supply chains will adapt and improve to meet evolving demands, bolstered by significant investments from companies like Schneider Electric to increase production capabilities domestically.
