A significant security vulnerability has been identified in Meta’s Llama framework, exposing AI systems to potential remote code execution. This flaw, tracked as CVE-2024-50050, has been rated with a CVSS score of 6.3 but deemed critical with a severity level of 9.3 by supply chain security firm Snyk.
The vulnerability arises from a deserialization of untrusted data, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary code by sending specially crafted malicious data. This issue primarily exists in the Llama Stack, which provides API interfaces for developing AI applications, including those using Meta’s Llama models.
In particular, the flaw is tied to the Python Inference API, which inadvertently deserializes Python objects using the pickle format—a method known for its security risks when processing untrusted data. Attackers could exploit this vulnerability if the ZeroMQ socket utilized by the API is exposed over the network, enabling them to execute code remotely.
Meta became aware of the issue on September 24, 2024, and subsequently addressed the vulnerability in version 0.0.41 of the Llama Stack on October 10, 2024. They also remedied the issue in the related pyzmq Python library. In their advisory, Meta stated that the use of pickle for socket communication has been replaced with JSON format to mitigate the risk.
This isn’t the first instance of deserialization vulnerabilities in AI frameworks. A similar vulnerability in TensorFlow’s Keras framework was reported in August 2024, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in machine learning libraries.
Moreover, recent disclosures include a high-severity flaw in OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which could be exploited for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. This vulnerability occurs due to improper handling of HTTP POST requests that permit an excessive number of URLs, enabling attackers to overwhelm websites with requests from OpenAI’s services.
Researchers have noted that today’s AI models are not just tools for innovation but could inadvertently facilitate the cyber attack lifecycle. Reports suggest that well-trained large language models could significantly enhance the methods and scale of cyber threats.
The burgeoning field of AI also raises concerns regarding security best practices, with studies indicating that AI models may inadvertently promote insecure coding practices, such as hardcoding API keys.
The cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, with AI technologies presenting both opportunities for enhancement and new vulnerabilities that must be diligently managed to protect against potential threats.
