Cloudflare recently released new data showcasing the popularity of top-level domains (TLDs) based on a metric it calls "DNS Magnitude." This metric measures how many unique clients send queries to each TLD, offering a more nuanced understanding of their reach than traditional volume metrics that can be skewed by a few high-traffic sources. Cloudflare’s data is derived from queries directed to its 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver.
One of the most surprising revelations from this data is the significant popularity of the .su domain, originally the country code for the Soviet Union. Earlier this year, ICANN considered retiring the domain, but those plans have been shelved for the time being. In fact, during certain periods, .su has demonstrated a higher DNS Magnitude than the widely used .com domain, which has raised eyebrows within the industry.
Among the newer TLDs, Google’s .dev ranks highest when assessed by DNS Magnitude. Additionally, "dot-brands" like .Google, .goog, .apple, and .microsoft have also performed exceptionally well in this metric, placing them in the top 25.
Cloudflare’s new feature provides detailed insights for each TLD, including data on DNS queries, geographical distribution, and SSL certificate statistics, allowing for a comprehensive look at domain popularity and usage.
