AMD has alerted users about a newly identified side-channel attack, drawing parallels to the notorious Meltdown and Spectre exploits that gained significant attention in 2018. This new vulnerability impacts a broad array of AMD processors, including desktop, mobile, and data center models, particularly the 3rd and 4th generation Epyc server processors.
The attack, referred to as the Transient Scheduler Attack (TSA), encompasses four vulnerabilities discovered during AMD’s investigation of a Microsoft report concerning microarchitectural leaks. Two variants of the TSA have been identified: TSA-L1, which can infer data from the L1 cache, and TSA-SQ, which can extract data from the CPU store queue.
While the severity of these vulnerabilities raises concern, AMD has classified them as having a low to medium risk level. This assurance stems from the complexities involved in executing a successful attack. It requires an attacker to run arbitrary code on the targeted machine, as well as local access to the device. Moreover, the exploit must be performed multiple times to yield any meaningful data, making it significantly challenging.
To mitigate these vulnerabilities, AMD has introduced Platform Initialization (PI) firmware revisions available to OEMs, urging customers to consult their OEM for BIOS updates pertinent to their products. Additionally, AMD recommends that users refer to their operating system vendor’s documentation for guidance on implementing mitigation strategies effectively.
