AMD is expanding its collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) by planning to build two additional supercomputers, which will augment the two existing systems in operation. The current systems are the all-AMD Frontier and IBM/NVIDIA-designed Summit.
The new supercomputers, named Lux AI and Discovery, are part of a significant investment of $1 billion from both private and public funding. These systems aim to promote advancements in science, energy, and national security. Lux AI is a promising U.S. AI Factory supercomputer set to deploy in early 2026, featuring AMD EPYC CPUs and Instinct MI355X GPUs, among other technologies. Its design focuses on enhancing AI-driven research capabilities by handling data-intensive and model-centric workloads efficiently.
Discovery, scheduled for deployment in 2028, differs in its architecture, utilizing Instinct MI430X GPUs aimed at supporting sovereign AI and scientific applications. This system is built to protect national data and maintain the U.S.’s competitive edge in science. Discovery will utilize the same HPE Cray Supercomputing GX5000 platform as Frontier, ensuring consistency for users transitioning from the older machines.
These developments underline a strong push toward harnessing supercomputing power for significant breakthroughs in various essential fields.
