Iran’s state television broadcaster suffered a cyberattack on the night of June 20, 2025, disrupting its programming to air videos advocating for protests against the government. Although the perpetrators remain unidentified, Iranian authorities have suggested that Israel is responsible for the incident. The broadcaster cautioned viewers that disturbances in broadcasting were likely due to external interference with satellite signals.
This hack marks yet another in a series of cyber incidents occurring in Iran, which have been largely attributed to actors linked to Israel. The attack coincided with the recent breach of Bank Sepah and Nobitex, the country’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform, which resulted in the theft of over $90 million. This incident signifies an escalation in the ongoing cyber warfare that has been waged between Israel and Iran for over a decade.
According to TRM Labs, Iranian entities have increasingly utilized virtual assets as a means of circumventing financial restrictions and as a tool for advancing broader geopolitical strategies, including the development of advanced weaponry technologies. The recent incidents underscore a troubling trend in which cryptocurrency exchanges, once on the periphery of conflict, are becoming prime targets amid geopolitical strife.
Further complicating the situation, Israeli officials disclosed that Iran has been hijacking private security cameras within Israel to gather intelligence, a tactic similar to strategies previously employed by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Refael Franco, a former deputy director at the Israel National Cyber Directorate, revealed that Iranian operatives had been attempting to connect to security cameras to monitor the impact of missile strikes, hoping to enhance their targeting accuracy.
Cybersecurity firm Radware noted that approximately 40% of the recent hacktivist DDoS attacks have been directed at Israel, with various groups announcing intentions to retaliate against the United States if it intervenes in the conflict against Iran. Groups like DieNet and Arabian Ghosts have amplified their threats, indicating the potential for collaborative cyber aggression as ongoing military confrontations unfold.
Experts caution that critical infrastructure and global businesses may become collateral damage if the cyber warfare escalates. Pascal Geenens, director of threat intelligence at Radware, stressed the need for vigilance, stating that the Israel-Iran conflict of 2025 serves as a stark example of hybrid warfare, where digital attacks and information campaigns are as significant as physical confrontations.
As more than 35 pro-Iranian groups have mobilized to execute coordinated attacks against Israeli infrastructure, the nature of these cyber offensives ranges from DDoS assaults to website defacements. Security researcher Pagilla Manohar Reddy highlighted that these attacks typically maintain a pattern of exaggeration and misinformation, with groups often claiming credit for unrelated outages and inflating damage reports for media attention, rather than achieving significant operational victories.
