BT is restructuring its operations by establishing a new standalone international division, aiming to concentrate on its core UK business. This strategic move, reported by the Financial Times, signals a potential withdrawal from the telecom giant’s global interests as it considers the possibility of selling or merging its overseas operations.
The new division will function independently from BT Group’s UK sector, catering to customers across more than 180 countries and employing over 8,000 staff members. Bas Burger, who previously held an executive role at BT Business, will lead this new unit and is expected to develop an “industry-leading” operation as noted in an internal memo.
Under CEO Allison Kirkby, who took charge in February 2024, BT is actively aiming to streamline its business structure and enhance its focus on the domestic broadband and telecom markets. The creation of this international division follows the recent sale of BT’s Italian branch to local telecom firm Retelit, reflecting the company’s ongoing evaluation of its international operations.
Montioring Internal Communications
Internal communications have revealed that BT communicated to its employees that this division’s formation is essential in response to growing competition. The company believes that this separation will maximize its chances of success both domestically and internationally. Moreover, further job cuts may occur as a result of this restructuring; however, BT reassured its employees that it is still on track with its previously announced plans for cost reductions.
Last year, BT committed to cutting £3 billion in expenses, with plans to reduce its workforce from approximately 130,000 in 2023 to between 75,000 and 90,000 by the end of the decade. The restructuring initiative is viewed as a strategic measure to bolster BT’s competitive posture against rivals, such as the impending merger between Vodafone and Three UK.
While a final decision regarding the sale or merger of the international division has yet to be made, BT’s willingness to explore these options demonstrates a clear intent to simplify its corporate structure and focus on the domestic market. This is critical, given the regulatory, infrastructural, and consumer demands that shape BT’s long-term growth strategy.
