Startup Groundcover has made its mark in the crowded observability market by leveraging eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filter) technology, which provides enhanced visibility into application stacks. Founded in 2021 by CEO Shahar Azulay, who previously managed a machine learning team at Apple, Groundcover identifies and addresses two critical issues in observability: the difficulty of instrumenting applications and the unpredictable costs associated with data volume-based pricing.
Recognizing that many companies often avoid comprehensive monitoring due to these challenges, Groundcover aims to eliminate the blind spots commonly found in critical systems. The company’s innovative approach has attracted significant attention, evident in its recent $35 million Series B funding round, raising its total funding to $60 million.
Azulay emphasizes that his firsthand experience with observability solutions informs Groundcover’s design philosophy, which aims to alleviate the pain points he and others in the industry have faced. At the heart of Groundcover’s platform is its unique use of eBPF technology, which has evolved from its traditional network monitoring roots to enable comprehensive insight into application-level operations.
Groundcover implements two types of eBPF probes: kernel space probes gather information directly from the Linux kernel, while user space probes provide visibility into active applications. This dual approach allows Groundcover to monitor performance and transaction details even if the data is encrypted. Azulay notes that their technology not only surpasses traditional application performance monitoring solutions but also offers significant context about application behaviors.
In contrast to traditional SaaS vendors, which often charge based on data volume, Groundcover adopts a "bring your own cloud" strategy, allowing customer data to remain in their environment. This not only enhances data privacy but also minimizes the costs related to unnecessary data transfers, making it feasible for organizations to monitor their infrastructures more comprehensively without financial penalties.
At KubeCon EU 2025, Groundcover unveiled additional capabilities, including support for Kubernetes monitoring and enhanced logging features. This expansion aims to provide users with intricate insights into various metrics, enhancing their observability capabilities.
With the latest funding, Groundcover plans to intensify its U.S. market efforts and explore adjacent areas like security monitoring and cloud cost optimization, building on its existing data collection strengths. Azulay stresses the company’s momentum and the urgency to capitalize on their technological advantages in an evolving market.
