Codeium has announced a new AI assistant named Cortex that possesses advanced reasoning abilities to tackle complex coding challenges.

Cortex goes beyond simple functions like autocomplete or code completion provided by other coding assistants, instead facilitating extensive reasoning, code generation, code reviews, and knowledge sharing, improving accuracy, reducing latency, and cutting costs.

As Anshul Ramachandran, the head of enterprise and partnerships at Codeium, explains, unlike other AI coding assistants which use a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) model to draw information about a codebase, Cortex directly accesses and utilizes raw data. This approach minimizes false positives compared to RAG-based methods.

“Imagine a foundational model designed to process the actual query and task using raw text data, without converting it into embeddings. Posing the question, ‘Is this relevant?’ then applying it within a complex multi-step reasoning process could lead to much more accurate results,” stated Ramachandran.

According to Ramachandran, they’ve applied their method to a vast amount of code without any compromise in performance.

He further noted that the unique aspect of Cortex lies in its capability to address latency issues, delivering highly accurate results almost instantaneously. The company asserts that Cortex can deliver outputs in mere seconds.

“If your tool takes 30 minutes to deliver a response and it’s correct 80% of the time, developers might not rely on it because if it takes that long, it should be nearly perfect. Otherwise, people might prefer handling it themselves,” Ramachandran commented.

He also mentioned that despite Cortex’s advanced reasoning capabilities, it is not intended to completely replace developers but rather to automate certain tasks, allowing developers to concentrate on other aspects.

“For us, the human is always in the driver’s seat. Even with things like Cortex, with all the modalities we have, a human has to review what’s coming,” he said. “We want you to take a look, accept, reject, and think about the code critically. We always tell our customers, don’t replace your SAST tools, or any of those things, because AI is meant to just be an enhancer, right? It does not replace anything.”

Cortex is available today for customers to start experimenting with. It integrates with the rest of Codeium’s offerings, including Autocomplete and Chat, and the company plans to integrate it into more of its products in the future.
