Google has released the last scheduled Android 15 beta, which introduces stable developer APIs and allows developers to update their apps and make them available on Google Play before the final release is rolled out to non-beta users.
The latest beta includes all necessary components to explore Android 15 features, test your applications, and provide feedback. […] If you lack a compatible device, you can utilize the 64-bit system images alongside the Android Emulator in Android Studio.
In addition to the API stabilization, Android 15 is launching multiple behavior adjustments that developers need to thoroughly test. Notable changes include modifications to the “package stopped” state, the integration of 16 KB memory pages, and the new “private space” feature.
The “package stopped” state, designed to halt apps until the user engages with them directly by opening them or indirectly through a widget, is now applied with increased rigor. This means when an app enters the stopped state, any pending intents are canceled, and the app’s widgets are rendered inactive by the system.
The implementation of 16 KB memory pages introduces several improvements like enhanced app launch speeds under memory stress, minimized power usage during app startup, quicker camera readiness, and faster system startup. However, this advantage comes with an increase in memory consumption. Importantly for developers, all applications that employ native code through Android NDK need to be recompiled for compatibility with Android 15. Applications purely written in Java or Kotlin do not require changes but testing is recommended by Google.
Private spaces represent a novel addition that allows users to generate protected areas for confidential data with an extra authentication layer. Once a private space is locked, all contained applications are halted, thus stopping any active or passive operations, including notifications. This has implications for all applications, particularly medical and launcher applications, which need specific considerations for ensuring a quality user experience.
Android 15 also ushers in numerous fresh functionalities, such as predictive back animations that offer previews of the results of user gestures, enhancements to camera performance under dim lighting, the option to share or record just a section of the screen, and full edge-to-edge display rendering. Adoption of these features remains optional.
For app readiness regarding Android 15, Google advises upgrading to Android Studio Koala, which is enhanced with an Android SDK Upgrade Assistant to simplify the process of adapting applications for this new version.
